Mastopexy (breast lift)
Mastopexy, or lifting the breasts, is a procedure that aims to lift and give form to sagging breast or breast that have lost their firmness. The excess skin is removed, the mammary gland is remodelled, and the nipple-areola complex is shifted to a higher position and then adapted to the size of the new breast. This procedure may be combined with breast augmentation and a correction of asymmetry with or without implants.
Anaesthesia and hospitalization
A mastopexy can be performed either under general or local anaesthesia (stand-by) and lasts about two hours. The patient remains hospitalized for one to three nights, depending on the type of procedure.
Medication includes the application of specific antiallergic plasters and the use of an elasticized bra beginning on the second day. Swelling tends to disappear in about a week, while bruises will take two to three weeks to disappear. Depending on the technique used, sutures may be internal or external. In the latter case they will be removed after 7-14 days.
